In a move that has surprised the advanced energy sector, fusion developer Zap Energy announced today its expansion into nuclear fission, becoming the first company to actively pursue both forms of atomic power. The Seattle-based startup, known for its innovative sheared-flow-stabilized Z-pinch fusion concept, will establish a new subsidiary, Zap Fission, to develop and commercialize small modular reactors (SMRs). This strategic pivot acknowledges the nearer-term commercial viability of fission while the company continues its long-range quest for fusion energy gain.
Zap Energy CEO Benj Conway described the move as a "pragmatic diversification" aimed at leveraging the company's core nuclear expertise to address immediate decarbonization needs. While reaffirming commitment to their Z-pinch fusion approach, company officials stated that the SMR venture provides a more predictable path to market and revenue generation within the next decade. This dual-track strategy allows the company to build a robust nuclear engineering and regulatory team that will ultimately benefit both fission and fusion projects.

The new subsidiary will focus on developing a 50 MWe factory-built microreactor design, leveraging technologies from established light-water reactor concepts to streamline the licensing process with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Zap Fission aims to capitalize on the growing demand for carbon-free, grid-firm power for data centers and industrial applications. The company has not yet disclosed the specific fuel type or coolant for its SMR design but emphasized a focus on passive safety features and rapid deployment timelines.
Financially, the expansion is supported by a new funding round led by existing investors, including Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Chevron Technology Ventures, though the specific amount was not disclosed. This capital will be firewalled for the fission subsidiary, ensuring that resources for the core fusion program remain dedicated to achieving key performance milestones. Zap's fusion effort continues to progress on its FuZE-Q prototype, which aims to demonstrate Q>1, or scientific breakeven, by pushing plasma temperatures beyond 3 keV and improving confinement times.
This development marks a significant departure from the industry norm, where fusion and fission have operated in largely separate ecosystems, often competing for talent and investment. Analysts suggest Zap's strategy could de-risk its long-term business model, providing a potential revenue stream that is not dependent on solving the immense scientific challenges of sustained fusion. However, it also introduces new risks, as the company will now have to navigate the complex and capital-intensive regulatory and supply chain hurdles of the established fission industry.
Looking ahead, Zap Fission intends to submit its preliminary design application to the NRC within the next 18 months, targeting a first-of-a-kind deployment in the early 2030s. Meanwhile, the fusion division remains focused on its next major experimental campaign, scheduled to begin in late 2027, which will be critical for validating their Z-pinch concept's scalability toward a commercial power plant. The industry will be watching closely to see if this unprecedented nuclear double play can accelerate the path to clean energy or if it will dilute the focus needed to achieve the ultimate goal of commercial fusion.
