The default byline is the Editorial Board
Opinion pieces published by Fusion Energy News carry the byline "Editorial Board of Fusion Energy News" unless an individual author is explicitly named. This reflects the reality of how these pieces are produced: they are debated, edited, and signed off on collectively by the editors responsible for that beat — not authored by a single voice.
Using a collective byline keeps the focus on the argument rather than the personality, and it makes clear that the position represents the publication, not one writer.
When an individual is named
An individual byline is used when at least one of the following is true:
- The piece is a first-person essay, memoir, or reported column where the author's vantage point is the point.
- The piece is a guest contribution from someone outside the masthead.
- The piece advances a position that does not represent the consensus of the Editorial Board.
- A named source on the masthead has direct expertise (e.g. a research summary written by a contributing physicist).
In each of those cases, the author is named, their role is disclosed, and any relevant conflicts are noted inline — consistent with our disclosures policy.
What the Editorial Board is
The Editorial Board is the group of senior editors responsible for the publication's opinion output. It is distinct from the reporting desk, which is responsible for news coverage and is never asked to take positions on companies, programs, or policy outcomes.
Membership of the Editorial Board is reviewed annually. Members recuse themselves from any editorial decision that touches a company, fund, or program in which they hold a material interest.
What an Editorial Board byline is not
- It is not anonymous. The masthead is public and accountable for everything published under it.
- It is not AI-generated. Opinion pieces are written and edited by humans, full stop.
- It is not sponsored. We accept no payment in exchange for editorial positions; see disclosures.
Corrections and rebuttals
Corrections to opinion pieces are logged the same way as news corrections. If you believe an Editorial Board piece misstates a fact, email corrections@fusionenergynews.com. Substantive rebuttals from named subjects are considered for publication as reply pieces.
