World's Largest Fusion Reactor Delayed Again to 2039
The ITER Council has revised the project's baseline schedule, pushing first plasma to 2035 and full deuterium-tritium operations to 2039, citing significant manufacturing and assembly challenges with key tokamak components.
The international ITER project has formally announced a significant schedule revision, delaying the start of full power operations by at least four years. In a recent update, the ITER Council confirmed that the new target for achieving first plasma is now 2035, a decade later than the 2025 date established in the previous baseline. Consequently, the commencement of deuterium-tritium (D-T) fuel cycle operations, the phase intended to demonstrate net energy gain, is now projected for 2039. The revised timeline is a direct result of critical component issues, primarily dimensional non-conformance in vacuum vessel sectors and the discovery of stress corrosion cracking in thermal shield cooling pipes. The technical challenges stem from two primary systems. First, inspections revealed that the welding of the nine massive vacuum vessel sectors, manufactured by consortia in Europe and Korea, resulted in dimensional deviations outside of specified tolerances. This requires complex on-site machining and realignment to ensure proper fit-up within the cryostat. Second, stress corrosion cracking and coolant leaks were discovered in the thermal shield cooling pipes, a system critical for managing heat loads between the 4K superconducting magnets and the 80K cryostat. The repair strategy for the thermal shield involves replacing affected sections, a delicate and time-consuming process given the component's location and the clean-room conditions required for assembly. This latest revision represents the most significant delay since the project's 2016 baseline was established, which had set the 2025 first plasma target. The new schedule, championed by Director-General Pietro Barabaschi, is intended to provide a more realistic and technically achievable path forward, integrating the known repair timelines rather than deferring them. The delay underscores the immense engineering complexity of constructing a first-of-a-kind, industrial-scale tokamak. ITER's primary mission is to inform the design of subsequent demonstration power plants (DEMOs), and a delay to 2039 for full D-T operations pushes the timeline for collecting critical data on plasma physics, materials science, and tritium breeding well into the 2040s.
