Unprecedented US nuclear fusion facility to solve critical tritium crisis for reactors

The planned facility, named UNITY-2 (Unified Industry and Technology), will be dedicated to testing the full life cycle of tritium within a fusion plant system. Its primary function is to serve as a platform for validating the performance and reliability of components like tritium pumps and breeding blanket prototypes under realistic conditions. A secure and efficient tritium fuel cycle is non-negotiable for sustained D-T fusion operations, as tritium is a radioactive isotope with an extremely limited global supply. The ability to breed, extract, purify, and reinject tritium with high efficiency is a prerequisite for any commercially viable D-T reactor.
