United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Partner to Accelerate Fusion Energy Development
The UK Atomic Energy Authority and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on key fusion technologies, including tritium handling and materials science.
The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) have formalized a collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at accelerating the development of commercial fusion energy. The agreement, announced via a press release, establishes a framework for the two government-affiliated organizations to combine their respective expertise. The partnership will focus on critical technology areas necessary for future fusion power plants, leveraging the UKAEA's extensive experience in fusion research and CNL's deep knowledge of nuclear materials and fuel cycles derived from its work on CANDU fission reactors. A primary focus of the MOU is the development of a robust tritium fuel cycle, a critical subsystem for any fusion device operating on deuterium-tritium (D-T) fuel. CNL brings significant operational experience in tritium handling, separation, and management from Canada's fleet of CANDU reactors, which produce tritium as a byproduct. The collaboration will address technologies for tritium processing, breeder blanket development, and advanced materials resistant to tritium permeation and neutron-induced degradation.
