The hiring comes as TAE advances work on its next-generation machine, "Copernicus," which is designed to demonstrate net energy gain conditions with the company's advanced beam-driven Field-Reversed Configuration (FRC) plasma. Following its predecessor, "Norman," which achieved temperatures over 75 million degrees Celsius, Copernicus is the final planned research step before the construction of a prototype power plant. Woodbury's role will be to lay the operational groundwork for that subsequent machine, dubbed "Da Vinci," which is slated for the early 2030s.
Financially, TAE has raised over $1.2 billion to date from a mix of private capital and sovereign wealth funds, including Google and Vulcan Capital. This new executive appointment is expected to bolster investor confidence as the company enters a more capital-intensive phase of development. Building the Da Vinci prototype will require billions more in investment, and demonstrating a clear path to operational excellence and project delivery is key to securing that funding.
TAE's approach is distinct from mainstream tokamak designs, as it pursues a linear, non-tokamak FRC device that is optimized for an advanced, aneutronic fuel cycle using hydrogen-boron (p-B11). While this fuel offers significant advantages, such as producing minimal neutron radiation and allowing for direct energy conversion, it requires far higher plasma temperatures—on the order of billions of degrees Celsius—than the deuterium-tritium fuel used in most other fusion projects. The success of Copernicus in pushing temperature and stability boundaries will be a critical validation of this high-risk, high-reward strategy.
Looking ahead, the fusion industry will be closely monitoring key performance milestones from the Copernicus device over the next two to three years. Under Woodbury's operational leadership, the company is expected to simultaneously accelerate site selection and supply chain development for the Da Vinci power plant. The successful integration of Woodbury's commercial project experience with TAE's deep scientific expertise will be the central challenge and opportunity as the company races to deliver commercial fusion energy by the 2030s.
