PALO ALTO, Calif. – Pacific Fusion announced Sunday it has secured a major new funding round and achieved critical plasma performance milestones, advancing its timeline for a commercial fusion power plant. In a letter to stakeholders, company founders detailed progress on their compact tokamak prototype, signaling growing investor confidence in the private race to harness fusion energy. The dual achievements position the company to begin development of its next-generation, net-energy-gain machine.
The company confirmed it has closed a $250 million Series C funding round, bringing its total capital raised to over $450 million. The round was led by venture capital firm Lux Capital with significant participation from strategic corporate partners, including energy giant Chevron. CEO Dr. Evelyn Reed stated the new capital is a direct endorsement of the company's technical roadmap and will be used to accelerate the construction of their next-generation device.

Technically, Pacific Fusion reported its prototype, SeaFire-1, successfully sustained a plasma at over 80 million Kelvin (approximately 7 keV) for a duration of 32 seconds. This result was achieved within a powerful 15 Tesla magnetic field generated by high-temperature superconducting magnets. The extended duration at this temperature represents a significant step in controlling the superheated plasma required for a sustained fusion reaction.
This latest milestone more than triples the company's previous plasma duration record of 9 seconds, set in late 2025. The achievement demonstrates increasing mastery over plasma stability, a fundamental challenge for all magnetic confinement fusion concepts. The company's compact, high-field tokamak approach aims to build smaller, more cost-effective power plants compared to larger international projects like ITER.
With the new funding, Pacific Fusion will now proceed with the design and construction of its SeaFire-2 machine. This successor device is engineered to be the company's first to achieve scientific breakeven, or a Q value greater than 1, where the fusion reaction produces more energy than is required to heat the plasma. This crucial step would validate the core physics and engineering of their commercial power plant design.
While the company has demonstrated significant progress, the path to a commercial reactor remains fraught with scientific and engineering hurdles, including materials science challenges for components facing intense neutron bombardment. Pacific Fusion aims to begin construction on SeaFire-2 in early 2027, targeting first plasma operations in 2029. The performance of that machine will be the key indicator of whether the company can meet its ambitious goal of a pilot power plant operating in the mid-2030s.
