Microsoft bets that a fusion power plant from Helion Energy will be operating this decade

This method involves forming two FRC plasmoids and accelerating them to high velocities within a confinement vessel, causing them to merge and compress. The company's strategy relies on a deuterium-helium-3 (D-He3) fuel cycle, which produces fewer neutrons than D-T reactions, theoretically simplifying reactor materials and enabling a direct energy conversion system.
