The newly granted licenses authorize site preparation and construction activities at the company's Everett facility, which is slated to house its seventh-generation fusion prototype, Polaris. Helion's technology utilizes a unique pulsed, non-ignition approach, accelerating and smashing together two plasma structures in a Field-Reversed Configuration (FRC). The company's system is designed to directly recapture electrical energy as the plasma expands following fusion, a method that promises higher efficiency than traditional steam turbine cycles. Furthermore, Helion's planned use of a Deuterium and Helium-3 fuel cycle is intended to minimize the production of high-energy neutrons, a key challenge for competing Deuterium-Tritium designs.
The project is backed by substantial private capital, including a $500 million Series E funding round led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. That round included an additional $1.7 billion in commitments tied to the achievement of specific technical and operational milestones. Clearing this significant regulatory gatepost is expected to unlock a new tranche of that committed capital, fueling the costly transition from research and development to full-scale construction and operation.
This achievement follows Helion's 2023 milestone of reaching ion temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees Celsius in its previous prototype, Trenta. While that demonstrated a key condition for fusion, the new licenses shift the company's focus from plasma physics to engineering, construction, and grid integration. The primary risk now pivots from scientific feasibility to the immense challenge of building a reliable, commercially viable power plant on an unprecedented timeline.
The Everett facility is central to a landmark power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with Microsoft in 2023. Under the agreement, Helion is contracted to begin providing at least 50 MW of fusion-generated electricity to the technology giant by 2028. Failure to meet this deadline carries significant financial penalties, adding immense commercial pressure to the Polaris construction and commissioning schedule.
With these state licenses in hand, Helion's next major regulatory hurdle will be securing final operational permits and navigating the federal regulatory framework being developed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The industry will be closely watching for a groundbreaking ceremony, now anticipated before the end of the year.
