General Fusion and UKAEA outline further fusion collaboration

Canada-based General Fusion and the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) have formalized a collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at accelerating the commercialization of Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF). The agreement outlines joint work on critical power plant technologies, leveraging UKAEA's extensive facilities and expertise at its Culham Science Centre. Key areas of focus include the development and testing of liquid lithium breeder blanket concepts, tritium fuel cycle systems, advanced materials science, and remote handling technologies. The collaboration will directly support the development of General Fusion's FDP, which is scheduled to become operational in the early 2030s. General Fusion's MTF concept is a hybrid approach that combines elements of magnetic and inertial confinement. The process begins by forming a magnetically-confined spheromak plasma. This plasma is then injected into a chamber containing a vortex of spinning liquid lithium. An array of high-speed pistons then symmetrically compresses the liquid metal, which in turn compresses and heats the plasma to fusion conditions exceeding 100 million degrees Celsius. This method uses the liquid lithium not only as a compression medium but also as the first wall, protecting the structural components from neutron flux and serving as the medium for tritium breeding.
