‘Forge the power of the stars’ Fusion energy plant coming to East Tennessee
Type One Energy and the Tennessee Valley Authority have signed a letter of intent to develop a stellarator-based fusion pilot plant at a retiring coal facility in Tennessee, targeting a 2035 commissioning date.
Type One Energy Group and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) have formalized a partnership to pursue the development of a fusion energy pilot plant. The parties signed a letter of intent to site Type One's "Infinity One" facility at the location of the Bull Run Fossil Plant in Clinton, Tennessee, which is scheduled for retirement. The project aims to demonstrate the commercial viability of Type One's stellarator-based fusion concept, with a target commissioning date of 2035. The Infinity One plant is the central component of Type One's Project Pegasus, which focuses on developing a high-field stellarator. This approach utilizes complex, non-planar magnetic coils to create a twisted, inherently stable plasma confinement geometry, avoiding the large plasma-driven currents required in tokamaks that can lead to disruptions. By leveraging high-field magnets, the design aims to achieve the necessary plasma density and temperature for net energy gain within a more compact device.
