Eni and UKAEA to Build World's Largest Tritium Facility
The UK Atomic Energy Authority and Italian energy firm Eni will construct the world's largest tritium fuel cycle research facility at the Culham Science Centre, backed by a £40 million investment from Eni.
The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and Italy's Eni have finalized an agreement to build a major tritium fuel cycle testing facility at the Culham Science Centre in Oxfordshire. According to a joint press release, Eni will invest over £40 million to construct the facility, which will be an extension of UKAEA's existing Hydrogen-3 Advanced Technology (H3AT) centre. The new plant is scheduled to begin operations around 2027. Its primary function will be to develop and validate the technologies required to handle, recycle, and purify tritium, a critical fuel component for first-generation deuterium-tritium (D-T) fusion power plants. This collaboration aims to solve one of the most significant engineering challenges for commercial fusion energy: establishing a closed-loop tritium fuel cycle. Future power plants must breed their own tritium fuel by reacting fusion-generated neutrons with lithium blankets surrounding the plasma chamber. The new facility will allow researchers to test integrated systems for extracting unburnt fuel from the vacuum vessel, separating tritium from other isotopes and impurities, and preparing it for reinjection into the plasma. These processes must be highly efficient to achieve a tritium breeding ratio greater than one, a necessity for sustained plant operation given the global scarcity and short half-life of tritium. The facility's development will directly support the UK's Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) prototype power plant program, which aims to deliver net electricity to the grid in the 2040s. The technologies proven at the Culham site are also applicable to other D-T tokamak designs, including the international DEMO project. The partnership builds on decades of tritium handling experience at Culham, most notably from operations at the Joint European Torus (JET), which pioneered the use of D-T fuel in a tokamak. For Eni, the investment represents a strategic expansion of its fusion energy portfolio. The Italian company has been a significant backer of the private fusion industry, holding a major stake in Commonwealth Fusion Systems since 2018. This agreement with a public research authority like UKAEA diversifies its approach, positioning it at the forefront of enabling technologies essential for the back-end of the fusion fuel cycle.
