Investor brief

A Chinese gas utility's bet on aneutronic p-¹¹B fusion

Executive Summary

ENN Energy is the fusion arm of a major Chinese natural-gas utility. The EXL-50U device is one of very few large-scale spherical-torus / spheromak devices in operation and the only major Chinese program explicitly targeting aneutronic proton-boron fusion.

Strategic Thesis

A utility (not a startup) can absorb the capex; aneutronic fuel removes the most expensive part of a power plant (the blanket).

The Problem

Global electricity demand is entering an unprecedented growth phase driven by AI infrastructure, data centers, transport electrification, industrial decarbonization, water desalination, and advanced manufacturing. Solar suffers intermittency, wind capacity-factor variability, natural gas carbon emissions, conventional nuclear cost and deployment speed, and batteries energy-density and duration limits. The world requires a new source of clean, dispatchable baseload energy. Fusion represents the ultimate energy source — the challenge is making it commercially practical.

EXL-50U — Spheromak / Spherical Torus for p-¹¹B

A spheromak is a self-organising plasma configuration with closed magnetic surfaces but no internal coils — geometrically the simplest closed-field-line confinement.

EXL-50U Device

Large spheromak / spherical torus operating in Langfang, China.

Utility Backing

ENN's gas-utility cash flows absorb the capex burden that defeats most startups.

Aneutronic Program

Explicit p-¹¹B fuel target — removing the blanket and tritium logistics.

Fuel Strategy

Hydrogen-Boron (p-¹¹B)

Aneutronic operation simplifies the power plant and eliminates neutron damage.

Category

Hybrid Direct + Thermal

Neutronicity

Aneutronic

Target efficiency

50–60% electrical (target)

Spherical-torus p-¹¹B reactor (EXL-50U platform) targeting direct alpha-particle energy conversion with thermal backup for bremsstrahlung recovery.

Conversion chain

  1. 1p-¹¹B plasma in spherical torus
  2. 2Alpha particles → direct collector
  3. 3X-rays + radiation → wall heat recovery
  4. 4Combined electrical output

China's leading private aneutronic program; bets on the spherical-torus geometry to relax magnetic-field requirements for p-¹¹B ignition.

Economic Vision

A utility can absorb the capital intensity of fusion R&D far longer than venture funding allows; aneutronic operation simplifies the eventual commercial plant.

Vision

Aneutronic fusion power inside a Chinese utility's generation portfolio.

Mission

Demonstrate p-¹¹B fusion at meaningful scale with utility backing.

Engineering Bottlenecks

  • p-¹¹B ignition temperature
  • Spheromak sustainment time

    EXL-50U commissioning

The description above reflects ENN Energy's publicly stated technology goals, roadmap and architecture. Many elements — particularly net-energy gain at scale, advanced fuel cycles, and grid-relevant economics — remain ambitious objectives that have not yet been demonstrated commercially anywhere in the fusion industry. Forward-looking statements should be treated as engineering targets, not certainties.
