US Laboratory Team Leader Wins IAEA Nuclear Fusion Prize for 2024
Dr. Annie Kritcher, the design lead for the first successful ignition experiments at the National Ignition Facility, has been awarded the 2024 IAEA Nuclear Fusion Prize for her leadership in inertial confinement fusion.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has named Dr. Annie Kritcher of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory the recipient of its 2024 Nuclear Fusion Prize. The award recognizes Kritcher’s leadership as the principal designer for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) experiments that first achieved scientific breakeven and target gain greater than unity in December 2022. The prize, established in 2006 and awarded biennially, acknowledges outstanding contributions to fusion energy research and development. The selection committee highlighted Kritcher's role in integrating theoretical design with experimental execution, a critical factor in overcoming long-standing challenges in inertial confinement fusion. Kritcher’s work focused on refining the hohlraum and capsule design for NIF's indirect-drive approach. Her team developed models that more accurately predicted plasma conditions and instabilities, enabling precise control over the laser-driven implosion symmetry required to achieve the temperatures and pressures for fusion ignition. This effort culminated in shot N221204, which produced approximately 3.15 MJ of fusion energy from 2.05 MJ of laser energy delivered to the target, achieving a target gain of 1.5. This result, and subsequent higher-yield shots, provided the first unambiguous demonstration of a burning plasma in a laboratory setting, a foundational goal for the inertial confinement fusion community for decades. The IAEA prize underscores the significance of the NIF results within the international fusion community.
