The round was led by Prime Movers Lab. The company's technical approach, proton-fast ignition, is a two-stage inertial confinement fusion process. First, a set of nanosecond-scale laser pulses compresses a D-T fuel capsule to high density, similar to conventional ICF methods. A subsequent, separate petawatt-class, picosecond-scale laser pulse then strikes a secondary target, generating a beam of relativistic protons. This proton beam is directed into the pre-compressed fuel, rapidly heating a localized spot to ignition temperatures. This method aims to decouple the compression and heating phases, which theoretically lowers the required driver energy and relaxes the high-symmetry implosion requirements that challenge conventional ICF as practiced at the National Ignition Facility. Founded in 2021, Focused Energy originated from research conducted at the Technical University of Darmstadt. The founding team includes plasma physicist Markus Roth and laser expert Todd Ditmire, who bring experience from both academic research and programs at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
