Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has raised over $1 billion in a new funding round, significantly increasing its capital to commercialize fusion energy. The investment will support the ongoing construction of the SPARC project, a compact, high-field tokamak designed to demonstrate net energy gain from fusion for the first time in a magnetically confined plasma. The company successfully tested a large-bore high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet, which produced a peak magnetic field strength of 20 tesla. This demonstration validated the core technology underpinning the SPARC and ARC designs. The use of HTS magnets, made from rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO), allows for the construction of significantly more compact and potentially less expensive tokamaks compared to those using traditional low-temperature superconducting magnets. SPARC is designed to be a pulsed, deuterium-tritium (D-T) experiment with the primary goal of achieving a plasma energy gain factor, or Q_plasma, greater than two. This would represent a significant scientific achievement, producing more thermal power from fusion reactions than is injected to heat the plasma. While not a power plant, SPARC is a necessary intermediate step to de-risk the physics and technology for the subsequent ARC power plant. The ARC (Affordable, Robust, Compact) concept builds directly on the high-field approach validated by the HTS magnet test and to be further proven by SPARC. The design envisions a power plant capable of producing hundreds of megawatts of electricity. A key feature of the ARC design is its demountable magnets, which would allow for easier maintenance and replacement of the vacuum vessel and internal components—a significant challenge for conventional tokamak designs.
