A company developing technology for compact fusion energy machines announced plans Thursday to manufacture them in the Tri-Cities area, potentially creating hundreds of permanent jobs in the long term.

Avalanche Energy Designs and the Tri-City Development Council signed a letter Thursday outlining their intent to work together to select a site for Avalanche’s first plant, work on needed permits, prepare infrastructure, develop a regional supply chain and develop the specialized skilled workforce that will be needed.

The costs of developing and constructing the proposed manufacturing plant is estimated to be close to $1 billion to be paid for with private funds.
