DOE green lights Xcimer Energy Fusion energy design, roadmap
The U.S. Department of Energy has favorably reviewed the conceptual design and development roadmap for Xcimer Energy's laser-based inertial fusion energy power plant, validating its scientific and engineering approach.
Xcimer Energy has successfully completed a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) review of its conceptual design for a commercial fusion power plant. The review, conducted under the DOE's Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program, affirmed the scientific and engineering viability of the company's approach to inertial fusion energy (IFE). This validation allows Xcimer Energy to proceed with its development roadmap, which targets the construction of a prototype facility later this decade. The company's reference architecture, named Athena, is designed for continuous, industrial-scale operation with a self-renewing fuel cycle. Xcimer's core technology utilizes a novel krypton-fluoride (KrF) gas laser system, which it claims is the world's most efficient high-energy laser. This laser architecture is intended to deliver significantly more energy to the fuel target at a lower capital cost per joule compared to other IFE concepts.
