A private fusion machine hit 150 million degrees, a first for the industry
Helion reports its seventh-generation FRC prototype, Trenta, has achieved ion temperatures exceeding 100 million Kelvin, a key threshold for net energy gain and a first for a privately funded fusion device.

Helion has announced that its Trenta prototype achieved plasma ion temperatures greater than 150 million degrees Celsius, equivalent to over 100 million Kelvin or approximately 13 keV. This result, disclosed by the company, marks the first time a private fusion entity has reported reaching this temperature milestone, a long-established minimum requirement for igniting many fusion fuel cycles. The achievement was realized in Trenta, the company's seventh-generation device, which operates on the principle of colliding and compressing two field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasmoids. The Trenta device functions by forming two distinct plasmoids at opposite ends of a linear vessel and accelerating them to high velocities using magnetic fields. They are then merged and compressed in a central chamber, rapidly heating the plasma to fusion-relevant conditions. This pulsed, high-beta approach is central to Helion Energy's development path. The company's stated long-term goal is to use a deuterium-helium-3 (D-He3) fuel cycle, which produces fewer high-energy neutrons than the more common deuterium-tritium (D-T) reaction. In May 2023, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) voted to regulate fusion energy systems under a framework distinct from and less stringent than that used for nuclear fission plants. The NRC is currently in the process of developing these specific regulations. While reaching the 100-million-Kelvin threshold is a necessary condition for net energy, it is not sufficient. The next critical steps for Helion involve simultaneously improving plasma density and energy confinement time to increase the fusion triple product (n·τ·T). The company has not released data on these other parameters for the high-temperature shots. CEO David Kirtley stated that the company's next-generation machine, Polaris, is designed to demonstrate net electricity production. According to the company, the goal for Polaris is to come online in 2028.
