Thomas Klinger has headed the Wendelstein 7-X project at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Greifswald since 2005, guiding the machine from assembly through first plasma in 2015 and on through the divertor upgrade, actively cooled wall installation, and the long-pulse high-performance campaigns that produced record triple-product and energy-turnover values for a stellarator. His programme provided the experimental confirmation that quasi-isodynamic optimisation works as designed, which is the physics basis underpinning the commercial optimised-stellarator developers now entering licensing and construction.
