Biographical Narrative

Academic Career & Impact on Plasma Physics

Sir Steven Cowley is a prominent theoretical physicist and the seventh Director of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), taking the post in 2018 alongside a professorship in astrophysical sciences at Princeton. He previously served as CEO of the UK Atomic Energy Authority and head of the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, home to the Joint European Torus (JET). Cowley has published over 140 papers, including pivotal work on stellarators with permanent magnets and stepped pressure equilibrium in reversed-field pinch plasmas, and has been a vocal advocate for the socio-economic dimensions of siting fusion reactors. He was made Knight Bachelor in 2018 and awarded the Glazebrook Medal in 2012.
