Academic Career & Impact on Plasma Physics
Robert "Bob" Weggel — twin brother of Carl — is a Founding Partner and original lead designer of the S.M.A.R.T. generator at Kronos Fusion Energy. He is an elite magnet systems engineer whose career has run in close parallel with his brother's, most notably at Commonwealth Fusion Systems from 2018 to 2020, where he was part of the engineering team that successfully designed the high-field magnets for the SPARC tokamak and helped the MIT spin-out scale its REBCO high-temperature superconductor technology.
At Kronos he applies his magnet systems expertise to architect the proprietary magnetic confinement systems required for the S.M.A.R.T. reactor design, and he is a named co-inventor on the foundational Kronos patent US12009112B2.
