The principal architect of laser-driven inertial confinement fusion whose 1972 Nature paper launched the modern ICF program and laid the scientific foundation for the National Ignition Facility.
John Hopkins Nuckolls (born 17 November 1930, Chicago, Illinois) earned his B.S. in physics from Wheaton College (1953) and M.A. from Columbia University (1955). He joined Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1955 as a staff physicist in nuclear weapons design.[1]
Nuckolls is the principal architect of laser-driven ICF. His seminal 1972 paper — “Laser Compression of Matter to Super-High Densities: Thermonuclear (CTR) Applications” (Nature 239, 139–142) — proposed compressing hydrogen fuel to over 10,000 times liquid density using high-energy lasers, predicting the conditions for fusion ignition.[2]
Nuckolls rose through Livermore’s laser fusion and inertial fusion leadership roles, became associate director for physics (1983), and served as the seventh LLNL director from 1988 to 1994.[3]
E.O. Lawrence Award (1969), APS James Clerk Maxwell Prize for Plasma Physics (1981), ANS Edward Teller Medal (1991), and the Enrico Fermi Presidential Award (2024) — one of the U.S. government’s most prestigious science honors. Nuckolls received the Fermi Award in January 2025 from the Biden administration.[4]
