The Hungarian-American physicist who co-designed the hydrogen bomb and championed laser-driven inertial confinement fusion, helping establish Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
Edward Teller (15 January 1908 – 9 September 2003) was born in Budapest, Austria-Hungary. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Leipzig in 1930 under Werner Heisenberg, fled Nazi Germany in 1933, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1941.[1]
During World War II, Teller joined the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, where he led thermonuclear studies. In 1951, with Stanisław Ulam, he devised the radiation-implosion (“staged”) architecture for thermonuclear weapons — the Teller–Ulam design. The concept was first tested at Enewetak Atoll on 1 November 1952 (Ivy Mike, ~10 MT yield).[2]
Teller co-founded Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1952 and served as its director (1958–1960). Through Livermore, he championed laser-driven inertial confinement fusion (ICF) as a pathway to civilian energy. The lab’s National Ignition Facility traces its institutional lineage to his advocacy.[3]
Teller received the Enrico Fermi Award (1962) and the National Medal of Science (1983). The “Edward Teller Lectures” series documents ICF progress he catalyzed. He remained a controversial figure throughout his life due to his testimony against J. Robert Oppenheimer and his advocacy for nuclear weapons programs.[4]
