Overview

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is the DOE’s largest science and energy national laboratory. ORNL’s fusion programme is one of the most comprehensive in the U.S., with strengths in fusion materials, blanket technology, tritium science, plasma theory, and ITER engineering.[1]

Materials leadership: ORNL has been the U.S. lead laboratory for fusion materials research for decades, operating the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) for irradiation studies. ORNL researchers (Steve Zinkle, Lance Snead, Yutai Katoh) have defined the field of fusion structural materials, including RAFM steels, SiC/SiC composites, and tungsten alloys.

Key Contributions

Stellarator theory: ORNL has been a centre of stellarator theory and simulation, contributing to W7-X physics and to the design optimisation of compact stellarators. Tritium: ORNL operates the only facility in the US capable of handling kilogram quantities of tritium (the Tritium Systems Test Assembly heritage). ITER US: ORNL manages the U.S. ITER Project Office, responsible for delivering U.S. in-kind contributions including the central solenoid module fabrication.[2]

Partnerships

ORNL partners with multiple private fusion companies through the INFUSE programme and direct collaborations, including Type One Energy on stellarator coil manufacturing.[3]
