Niek Lopes Cardozo

Career

Niek J. Lopes Cardozo is a professor of Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion at Eindhoven University of Technology and former programme director of DIFFER (Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research). He previously worked at FOM Institute for Plasma Physics and contributed to the TEXTOR and ASDEX Upgrade experimental programs.[1]

Fusion Technology Roadmap

Engineering-first philosophy: Lopes Cardozo has argued influentially that the main barriers to fusion power are no longer plasma physics but engineering and technology: materials qualification, tritium breeding, remote maintenance, and component reliability. His roadmap analyses have shaped European fusion strategy.

Education and Training

He has been a leading voice in fusion education, establishing one of the few dedicated university fusion engineering programs in Europe. His group at Eindhoven trains the next generation of fusion engineers in areas spanning plasma physics, materials science, magnet technology, and systems engineering.[2]

Contributions

His research includes transport studies in tokamak plasmas, electron cyclotron heating experiments, and systems analysis of fusion power plants. He has published extensively on the technology readiness of fusion and the gap analysis between ITER and a power plant.[3]
