Lyman Spitzer Jr.

The Princeton astrophysicist who invented the stellarator in 1951 and founded the program that became the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory — launching the American controlled-fusion effort.

Early Life and Education

Lyman Spitzer Jr. (26 June 1914 – 31 March 1997) was born in Toledo, Ohio. He earned his B.A. from Yale in 1935, spent a year at Cambridge studying under Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, and received his Ph.D. in astrophysics from Princeton in 1938 under Henry Norris Russell.[1]

Invention of the Stellarator

In early 1951, prompted by news of exaggerated Argentine fusion claims, Spitzer conceived the stellarator — a device that confines plasma in a twisted toroidal magnetic field without requiring a plasma current. He proposed the concept to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in March 1951; funding was approved by July 1951.[2]

Key insight: Unlike tokamaks, the stellarator’s confining field is generated entirely by external coils, eliminating the disruption risk inherent in current-driven devices. This advantage, recognized by Spitzer from the start, drives continued stellarator research today.

Project Matterhorn and PPPL

Spitzer founded Project Matterhorn at Princeton in 1951 as a classified fusion research program. The Model A stellarator was operational by 1953. After the 1958 Geneva Conference declassified fusion research worldwide, the project was renamed the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) in 1961.[3]

Contributions to Astrophysics

Beyond fusion, Spitzer pioneered the concept of space-based telescopes, first proposing the idea in 1946. NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope (launched 2003) was named in his honor. His textbook Physics of Fully Ionized Gases (1956) remains a foundational reference in plasma physics.[4]

Legacy

Spitzer worked until the day he died, 31 March 1997. The stellarator concept he invented has seen a major revival with Wendelstein 7-X in Germany and remains a leading alternative to the tokamak for fusion energy.[5]
