Early Life and Career
Lev Andreyevich Artsimovich (25 February 1909 – 1 March 1973) was born in Moscow. He graduated from Belarusian State University in 1928 and joined the Leningrad Physical-Technical Institute under Abram Ioffe, working on electron optics and X-ray physics. During World War II he led the Soviet electromagnetic isotope-separation (calutron) program.[1]
Leading the Tokamak Program
From 1951 until his death, Artsimovich headed the entire Soviet controlled-fusion program at the Kurchatov Institute. Under his direction, the series T-1 through T-11 was built, systematically exploring the tokamak concept proposed by Tamm and Sakharov.[2]
The T-3 breakthrough (1968): At the IAEA conference in Novosibirsk, Artsimovich announced that T-3 had achieved electron temperatures exceeding 10 million degrees (>1 keV) with confinement times of 10–20 ms — an order of magnitude above any other device. Western skepticism persisted until a British team from Culham, led by Nicol Peacock, independently confirmed the results in 1969 using Thomson-scattering laser diagnostics.
Global Impact
The T-3 confirmation triggered a worldwide pivot to tokamak research. The United States, UK, Japan, and Europe all converted or built new tokamaks. Every major magnetic-fusion experiment built since — including JET, TFTR, JT-60, and ITER — traces its lineage to Artsimovich’s program.[3]
Legacy
Artsimovich was elected Academician of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in 1953 and served on its Presidium. His monograph Controlled Thermonuclear Reactions (1961; English translation 1964) became a standard reference. He died in Moscow on 1 March 1973.[4]
