Origins and Mission

Kyoto Fusioneering (KF) was founded in 2019 by researchers from Kyoto University, one of Japan's leading fusion research institutions. Unlike most fusion startups that focus on achieving plasma confinement and fusion conditions, KF took a deliberately different approach: it focuses on the engineering systems around the plasma — the blanket, heat exchangers, tritium processing, and power conversion systems needed to turn fusion reactions into electricity and useful heat.1

Kyoto Fusioneering occupies a unique and potentially highly valuable niche in the fusion ecosystem. While reactor developers focus on the plasma physics challenge, KF is building expertise in the engineering systems that every successful fusion reactor will need regardless of confinement concept. The company's supplier positioning reduces its exposure to the risk that any single confinement approach fails, while giving it potential access to the entire market. Key challenges include demonstrating blanket and tritium systems at relevant scale and navigating the regulatory landscape for tritium handling across multiple jurisdictions.5
