Overview

Gauss Fusion is a European fusion energy company founded in Germany with the mission of developing a stellarator-based fusion power plant. The company draws heavily on the scientific and engineering heritage of the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) experiment at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Greifswald, widely regarded as the world's most advanced stellarator.[1]

Technical Approach

Stellarators confine plasma using precisely shaped external magnetic coils rather than relying on plasma current for confinement, as tokamaks do. This design eliminates the risk of plasma disruptions and enables inherently steady-state operation — both significant advantages for a power plant. However, stellarators require extremely complex three-dimensional coil geometries that have historically been difficult to design and manufacture.[2]

Gauss Fusion aims to translate the optimization principles demonstrated by W7-X into a reactor-scale device. The company's roadmap involves developing high-temperature superconducting (HTS) coils shaped to the stellarator geometry, advancing plasma-facing component technology, and designing integrated power-plant systems.

Heritage and Team

The company's technical leadership includes scientists and engineers who contributed to the design, construction, and operation of Wendelstein 7-X. This device, which achieved first plasma in 2015 and has progressively demonstrated improved confinement, validated the quasi-isodynamic optimization concept that underlies Gauss Fusion's reactor design philosophy.[3]

Wendelstein 7-X demonstrated that advanced stellarator optimization can achieve energy confinement times competitive with similarly sized tokamaks — a result that motivates the commercial stellarator pathway.

Outlook

Gauss Fusion represents one of the few private-sector efforts worldwide pursuing the stellarator concept at power-plant scale. The company benefits from Europe's deep stellarator expertise and the strong experimental validation provided by W7-X, but faces the challenge of scaling complex 3D coil systems while achieving the cost targets required for commercial energy.
