The New Zealand–born physicist who discovered the atomic nucleus and performed the first artificial nuclear reaction in 1919 — laying the experimental foundation for all fusion science.
Ernest Rutherford (30 August 1871 – 19 October 1937) was born near Nelson, New Zealand. He studied at Canterbury College and won an 1851 Exhibition Scholarship to Cambridge, where he worked under J.J. Thomson at the Cavendish Laboratory. He held the chair of physics at McGill University (1898–1907) and the University of Manchester (1907–1919) before succeeding Thomson as Cavendish Professor.[1]
In 1911, Rutherford’s alpha-particle scattering experiments at Manchester revealed that the atom’s positive charge is concentrated in a tiny, dense nucleus. This nuclear model replaced Thomson’s “plum pudding” model and became the foundation of nuclear physics.[2]
Rutherford received the 1908 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on radioactive transformations. He is widely regarded as the father of nuclear physics. His students and protégés include Niels Bohr, James Chadwick (who discovered the neutron), John Cockcroft, and Ernest Walton — the latter two achieving the first accelerator-driven nuclear reaction in 1932.[3]
