The 1989 announcement by Fleischmann and Pons that electrolysis could produce fusion at room temperature — a scientific sensation that was quickly discredited but continues to echo in public perception of fusion.
On March 23, 1989, electrochemists Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons held a press conference at the University of Utah announcing that they had achieved nuclear fusion at room temperature in a simple electrolysis cell containing palladium and heavy water (D2O). They reported excess heat and neutron production consistent with D–D fusion reactions.[1]
Within months, the scientific consensus turned decisively against cold fusion. Key problems: (1) The reported neutron production was millions of times too low to account for the claimed heat; (2) No helium-4 (the expected fusion product) was detected; (3) Most replication attempts found no excess heat; (4) The few positive results could be attributed to experimental artefacts (inadequate calorimetry, chemical reactions, or measurement errors).[2]
A DOE review panel in 1989 found no convincing evidence for cold fusion. A second DOE review in 2004 reached the same conclusion. The episode damaged public understanding of fusion and created lasting confusion between “cold fusion” (discredited) and mainstream “hot fusion” (the multi-billion-dollar international programme). Some researchers continue to study anomalous heat effects under the name “low-energy nuclear reactions” (LENR), but no reproducible, scientifically accepted results have emerged.[3]
